🦉 From Recycled Can to Whimsical Fall Owl
There’s just something I love about taking an ordinary item that would normally end up in the recycling bin and turning it into something completely unexpected! This little owl started with a simple recycled can, a few scraps of cardboard, some leftover yarn, and a little imagination.
I wanted to give him a cozy, rustic fall feel, so I reached for warm orange paint, earthy yarn colors, twine, and a little Antique Gold Rub ’n Buff. And I have to say… I think he turned out pretty cute! 🧡🦉
The best part is that you can make this little guy with things you may already have around the house.
🍂 What You’ll Need
1 clean recycled can
Orange acrylic paint
Yellow acrylic paint
Cinnamon
Yarn in your choice of fall colors
Crochet hook appropriate for your yarn
Thin cardboard
2 large buttons
Twine
Hot glue
Scissors
Antique Gold Rub ’n Buff
Paintbrushes
🧡 Start With the Can
I began by giving my recycled can two coats of orange paint. While the second coat was still wet, I sprinkled a light coating of cinnamon all over the painted surface.
The cinnamon adds such a wonderful rustic, aged look! As the paint dries, it gives the can a little texture and makes the orange feel much more earthy and vintage.
Set the can aside to dry completely while you work on the rest of your owl.
I took the old label off the can and washed it really well.
I have it two coats of paint.
Sprinkle the cinnamon on it while it’s still wet.
🪶 Crochet Feathers
While my can was drying, I crocheted 7 little feathers using different shades of yarn.
I used a simple little feather pattern:
Simple Crochet Feather
Ch 4 and join with a slip stitch to form a ring.
Crochet 4 hdc into the ring.
Ch 2.
Slip stitch into the 2nd chain from the hook to form a little picot.
Crochet another 4 hdc into the ring.
Ch 1.
Slip stitch into the last hdc.
Fasten off.
And that's it!
I made my feathers in a combination of warm orange and cream yarns. Don't worry about making them all exactly alike. In fact, I think the slight differences make them even more charming.
The cardboard I used was white on one side so I left it like that. It worked out perfectly for the whites of his eyes.
🦉 Making the Owl's Face
For the eyes, I cut:
2 large circles
2 smaller circles
I layered the smaller circles over the larger ones and then glued a button in the center of each eye.
For his beak, I simply cut a small piece of thin cardboard into a triangle shape and painted it yellow.
I also cut two wing shapes from the same thin cardboard.
You don't need a fancy template for these. I just freehanded mine. That's one of my favorite things about projects like this—they don't have to be perfect to be adorable!
🪶 Putting Him Together
Once everything was ready, I started gluing the pieces onto the can.
I positioned the eyes toward the top, added his little cardboard beak in the center, and then attached the crocheted feathers around the bottom to create his fluffy little body.
The two larger cardboard pieces on the sides became his wings, with the lighter feathers tucked in around his body.
I played around with the placement before gluing everything down until I was happy with his expression and shape.
✨ Adding a Little Vintage Grunge
Once my owl was assembled, I grabbed some Antique Gold Rub ’n Buff and lightly rubbed it here and there over the can and some of the cardboard pieces.
I didn't want to cover everything—I just wanted little touches of gold peeking through.
This small step made such a difference! It gave him that old-fashioned, grungy, vintage fall look I was going for.
The Finishing Touch
Finally, I wrapped several pieces of twine around the top portion of the can and tied them into a little rustic bow.
And just like that, my recycled can had officially become a little fall owl! 🦉🍂
I love how the different textures all come together—the rough twine, soft crochet feathers, textured cinnamon-painted can, cardboard details, and little touches of antique gold.
A Little Creativity Goes a Long Way
This project is a perfect reminder that you don't need expensive craft supplies to make something special.
A recycled can + leftover yarn + a piece of cardboard + a little paint + imagination = a whole new little creation!
And that's really what I love most about crafting. You can look at something ordinary and see what it could become.
So before you toss that empty can into the recycling bin, take another look at it. You might just be looking at your next little craft project! 🧡
